A novelprocedurefor reductionandsimultaneousprotectionof phenolgroupsof hydroxycinnamicacidsto therelatedalcoholshas beendeveloped.Duringthe formationof mixedanhydridesfromtheacidsandan alkylchloroformate,thephenolwasprotectedas carbonate,andthe mixedanhydrideswerereducedwithan aqueoussolutionof sodiumborohydride.Freephenolswereobtainedby deprotectionundermildconditionswith30%aq.NH4OHin methanol.O-protectedphenolicalcoholscan be convertedby standardmethodsintoorthogonalprotectedderivatives.Thisrapidandefficientsyntheticmethodoffersa simpleandhigh-yieldpreparationoftheseimportantfinechemicals,overcomingthetediousandcostlyproceduresassociatewiththeuseof strongreducingagentssuchas LiAlH4andDIBALH.
