Abstract

In 1862 Baldassarre Boncompagni printed the whole Latin text of the Pratica Geometrie as it was offered in a single 15th century manuscript, which is now preserved in Rome, in the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, with the shelfmark Urb. Lat. 292. This noteworthy editorial operation made the work available to a vast number of scholars, but at the same time spread the text in a form which was often misleading. The Pratica Geometrie of Leonardo Pisano, in fact, has been passed down in thirteen handwritten witnesses, which have not yet been completely investigated. In this paper is published, for the first time, the critical text of the dedicatory epistle to magister Dominicus equipped with the complete apparatus of variants, the Italian translation and the analysis of some issues. At the current state of the manuscript collation, it’s not possible to propose a definitive stemma codicum yet: however, some hypotheses are proposed about the reciprocal relationships of the manuscript witnesses.
