The concept of μίμησις lies at the core of Plato’s philosophy and it is not only indispensable for any understanding of views of verbal and visual representation in the history of ancient aesthetics; it is also essential for the history of Neoplatonism and of the schools of late antiquity. Accordingly, the aim of the present paper is to investigate the role of μίμησις in a Late Antique isagogical text. In the Prolegomena, which is to say the introduction to Plato and his dialogues that was in use in the Neoplatonist school of Alexandria in the mid-6th cent. AD., the analysis of the textual contexts in which the term μίμησις appears is useful to understand the metaphysical meaning of Plato’s teaching.

Abstract
The concept of μίμησις lies at the core of Plato’s philosophy and it is not only indispensable for any understanding of views of verbal and visual representation in the history of ancient aesthetics; it is also essential for the history of Neoplatonism and of the schools of late antiquity. Accordingly, the aim of the present paper is to investigate the role of μίμησις in a Late Antique isagogical text. In the Prolegomena, which is to say the introduction to Plato and his dialogues that was in use in the Neoplatonist school of Alexandria in the mid-6th cent. AD., the analysis of the textual contexts in which the term μίμησις appears is useful to understand the metaphysical meaning of Plato’s teaching.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
