The investigation into the disciplinary role of Representation in the didactics of the Royal School of Engineering in Naples has discovered an important moment for reflection in the critical reading of text books and manuals used by engineering students in the nineteenth century. With the help of analytical works, the card indexing of texts and graphi c tables, thi s study, whi ch was begun for the Bi-centennial (1811-2011) anniversary as regards the foundation of the first Italian School of Engineering from a civil engineering standpoint, can be included along with that research whose aim is to individualize engineering roots in Southern Italy. Thi s is a long and difficult undertaking but it is certainly an undertaking which is rich in fascinating surprises.
