The National biodiversity strategy (NBS 2010) sets several challenges and targets to avert biodiversity loss in Italy. The NBS identifies urban areas as the places most exposed to the greatest pressures on ecosystems. It therefore strongly recommends the integration of different policies into spatial planning in order to halt habitat fragmentation, the heat island effect and natural soil loss, especially making use of green areas and ecosystem enhancement in urban areas. From this point of view, spatial planning has to be renewed, especially in metropolitan areas, where threats and weaknesses to biodiversity conservation are greater than in any other place. It is also important in to focus on the shift. spatial and urban planning. Traditional methods, such as the geometrical scheme of core areas, corridors and buffer zones (Malcevschi 2010) or the island biogeography theory of landscape ecology (Risser et al. 2007), used to identify ecological networks, cannot be successfully adopted at metropolitan level. For this reason, the NBS also fosters housing renewal and ecological regeneration within a new kind of building code.
