The seismic events registered in central Italy since August 2016, remind us of the dramatic condition that submitted many municipalities in Campania in the ‘80s. Last November 23rd recurred the 36th anniversary of Irpinia’s earthquake, but we can still see the effects this terrible wound inflicted to Campania’s population. In that occasion, the aid machine did not delay to get in motion and in few months it was proclaimed the Law n°219 of May 14th 1981 that allocated to Campania region the “necessary” funds for the rebuilding. The intervention plan concerned both the construction of new buildings to solve the residential problem, both the consolidation of damaged buildings. In the Neapolitan and Phlegraen area, it began a campaign of intervention for the stabilization of the ancient and the minor buildings. The interventions were substantially characterized by the use of reinforced concrete and steel, according to intervention techniques that certainly did not have enough field trials, but were standardized and largely used. The current research investigates the performance efficiency expressed by these “urgent” interventions after approximately forty years from their application. The target territory is the Neapolitan and Phlegraen area where the seismic system had a continuous evolution, because of the bradyseism, that stressed the consolidated structures. The case studies were pinpointed with the help of the local administrations and the professionals, and the interventions were analyzed by interviewing the construction workers that used them. The study also proposes a critical reflection about the strategic choices and the use of experimental techniques used in 1980 in Campania, trying to give a methodological contribution and an invitation to rebuild the towns in Central Italy as soon as possible through compatible, efficient and durable intervention.
