"It's like coming home": this is what Hannah Arendt felt every time she visited Karl Jaspers in Basel on her returns to Europe. First a bond of discipleship, then an intellectual fellowship, and finally a profound friendship: these are the stages of a unique human and spiritual encounter that lasted more than forty years and was sometimes tested by bitter controversies, such as those on the "German essence" in the 1930s and on the "question of guilt" in the 1940s. Expression of this singular philosophical friendship between a man and a woman, even before that between two great personalities of the 20th century thought, are the three contributions by Arendt dedicated to Jaspers, presented here for the first time to the Italian public: "Jaspers, citizen of the world?" (1957), which proposes a reading of Jaspers' universal history from a cosmopolitan point of view; "The Future of Germany" (1967), in which Arendt, in the wake of Jaspers, denounces the risks of post-war German democracy; and finally "Jaspers at eighty-five" (1968), a touching portrait of the philosopher a year before his death, from which two vibrant Arendtian testimonies emerge on the exemplary virtues of "fidelity" and "gratitude".

Abstract
"It's like coming home": this is what Hannah Arendt felt every time she visited Karl Jaspers in Basel on her returns to Europe. First a bond of discipleship, then an intellectual fellowship, and finally a profound friendship: these are the stages of a unique human and spiritual encounter that lasted more than forty years and was sometimes tested by bitter controversies, such as those on the "German essence" in the 1930s and on the "question of guilt" in the 1940s. Expression of this singular philosophical friendship between a man and a woman, even before that between two great personalities of the 20th century thought, are the three contributions by Arendt dedicated to Jaspers, presented here for the first time to the Italian public: "Jaspers, citizen of the world?" (1957), which proposes a reading of Jaspers' universal history from a cosmopolitan point of view; "The Future of Germany" (1967), in which Arendt, in the wake of Jaspers, denounces the risks of post-war German democracy; and finally "Jaspers at eighty-five" (1968), a touching portrait of the philosopher a year before his death, from which two vibrant Arendtian testimonies emerge on the exemplary virtues of "fidelity" and "gratitude".File | Dimensione | Formato | |
