In recent years, the number of reinforced concrete (RC) projects specifying glass-fiber-reinforced-polymer (GFRP) reinforcing bars has increased significantly due to the corrosion-free and magnetic transparency properties of GFRP composites. Nonetheless, reports on the performance of GFRP-RC structures exposed fire has been limited; and, due to the susceptibility of polymers to high temperatures, the performance of such structures under fire loading is of fundamental interest for the full implementation of this technology. This paper presents residual strength evaluation and structural behavior of fire-exposed GFRP RC slabs using two types of round solid GFRP rebars with different surface characteristics; where the ability to retain structural integrity during and after a standard fire exposure is evaluated. This research is conducted following ASTM E119, Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials, where the RC slabs are loaded during a two-hour predetermined fire test exposure. To this end, provisions available in ACI 440.1R are applied to analyze the theoretical design capacity of the RC slabs compared to the experimental performance, both before and after fire exposure under static loading. As part of a comprehensive research study addressing the behavior of GFRP RC elements subject to flexure, this research on fire testing and residual strength of GFRP RC slabs demonstrates the application of this technology to buildings. © 2015, NetComposites Limited.
