Rising damp is one of the most frequently occurring causes of deterioration of wall structures in historical buildings. Porosity of stones and their ability to absorbe water produce building damage due mainly to the water content of foundation soil and the presence of underground river. Damage produces several types of degradation which compromise mechanical and energetical features of material and have a negative impact on the thermo-hygrometric conditions of internal areas and on the conservation of cultural artefacts. Traditional interventions to contrast rising damp are designed around the interaction of water with materials and aim to block the rise by introducing water-proof layers, of physical or chemical nature or aided by external elecrical fields in order to foster the evaporational features of materials. The innovative technology of Charge Neutralisation suggest the opposite approach by ignoring material features and focussing on the water molecule and on polarity induced by external magnetic fields, this technology relies on a weak electromagnetic field which neutralises polar behaviour of water, which is subject to the electric field induced by stone material, and therefore eliminating actions which are the cause of rising damp.
