In the present paper, after discussing some tenets of Gianni Vattimo on Bildung in the epoch of the liberation of differences and ‘dialects,’ the idea of ‘cosmopolitan’ Bildung is put forward. Against the backdrop of Raúl Fornet-Betancourt’s hermeneutics-oriented theories on intercultural dialogue, it is shown how a genuine dialogue among cultures cannot settle for the mere coexistence of ‘dialects’ that have their say, but should be directed towards the building of horizons of universality, although the universality pursued should not be that of the ‘concept,’ but that of ‘comprehension.’ Matthew Lipman’s community of philosophical inquiry is, finally, indicated as the educational device that can promote among students a cosmopolitan dialogue, animated by hermeneutical intelligence and thriving on a ‘hermeneutics of strangers’ and ‘cultural disobedience.’

Abstract
