Abstract

★ Since the Nineteenth century, the ties between literature and painting in the Seventeenth century have been studied mainly by art historians, rarely by literary critics. This strongly imbalanced reading has led to the idea of literature being a maidservant to painting in the Seventeenth century. This study aims to offer an overview of the relationship between literature and painting in Seventeenth- century Italy, where Milan, Bologna, Florence, Rome and Naples furnished painter-poets, poets inspired by famous canvases and writers of treatises who, taking their lead from Horace’s ut picture poësisconstructed a new rhetoric of art in Counter-Reformation Italy.
