This paper deals with particle–wall interaction phenomena in entrained-flow slagging coal gasifiers. Micromechanical interactions were studied by cold particle impacts on a flat surface. Montan wax was used to simulate, at nearly ambient temperature, the char–slag rebound characteristics upon colliding the wall. Particle–wall collision was described in terms of the restitution coefficients. The influence of the particle impact velocity and angle as well as the target surface and structure on the rebound characteristics was studied. Results highlighted that the elastic–plastic model is suitable to model particle-wall collisions. Moreover, the presence of a powdery layer favours the establishment of segregation-coverage regime with the formation of a dense-dispersed phase in the near-wall zone in entrained-flow slagging gasifiers.

Abstract
