Abstract This article reviews current knowledge and applications of drug-eluting devices in the treatment of peripheral arterial disease. The authors briefly report on the performance of plain old balloon angioplasty and bare metal stents in femoro-popliteal and below-the-knee lesions. This article explains the rationale behind the development of drug-eluting devices and describes the main technical features of currently available drug-eluting stents and drug-coated balloons. Dedicated sections discuss the results of trials investigating the potential benefits of these devices used in femoro-popliteal and infra-popliteal arterial vascular beds. Finally, ongoing studies and potential novel applications of drug-eluting technologies in other vascular beds are mentioned.
