Papyri Vergilianae is an instrument for a philological approach to the thirty-five papyri – including parchment fragments, wooden tablets and ostraka – coming from the eccentric provinces of the Roman Empire (and, in particular, from the pars Orientis) and representing part of the ‘History of Tradition’. The core of the volume consists of the analytic filing of the documents (‘Second Part’), and of the edition of their texts and the Vergilian edition known mainly through the remaining manuscript tradition that exploits a critical edition of reference as a ‘parallel text’ (‘Third Part’). Abstract

Actually, they are expression of the reception of Vergil’s works and are sign of the diversified function and circulation among the cultural and intellectual provincial milieux from the 1st to the 4th century a.D. The core of the volume consists of the analytic filing of the documents (‘Second Part’), and of the edition of their texts and the Vergilian edition known mainly through the remaining manuscript tradition that exploits a critical edition of reference as a ‘parallel text’ (‘Third Part’). The opening section is an introduction (‘First Part’), while the ending one contains texts which, although they are not Vergilian hexameters, however they document their fortune as well (‘Fourth Part’).
