Abstract

The environmental rehabilitation has been far-back identified as a priority objective of European intervention strategies, that indicate urban waterfronts among the possible action areas. On the coastline resources enhancement aspects combine with opportunities offered by the relations between the cities and sea, that become an occasion for contemporary city overall regeneration, in particular for the Mediterranean city. In contexts characterized by important environmental characters, waterfronts also assume the role of urban identity landmarks, constantly transforming but permanently recognizable in settlements historical evolution. Analyzing waterfronts also means referring to multi-scalar, diversified and interdisciplinary actions. The contribution is intended to return the work experience on Meta waterfront enhancement and sustainable rehabilitation processes recently carried out by DPUU (Department of Urban Design and Planning) Technology and Environment Research Unit of University of Naples “Federico II”, in cooperation with the Department of Hydraulic, Geotechnical and Environmental Engineering of University of Naples Federico II and the Department of Environmental Strategies of the Second University of Naples, on behalf of Meta council administration. The research is addressed through a multidisciplinary strategic approach that compares cultural, tourist and productive vocations of Meta territory, investigating the possibility of putting together a network of potential coastal transformations (port, bathing services and tourism) and translating them into local resource for the city, defining processes, local technical policies for sustainable actions, technologies, performance assessment, technical control, low impact solutions. The study analyzes indeed the possibility of marinas development or, alternatively, other coastal development scenarios, aimed at enhancing local economy as an opportunity for community growth.
