Abstract

As well as for the built environment and for the ways of building, the Etruscan necropolis of central Italy are first of all characterized by the urban system, designed as a city inspired by the eternal life. Actually, the city and the landscape do not have a solution of continuity. Moreover, in a space built for the eternal life, between paths, streets and crossroads, the house, rather than the final resting place, remains the same as ever. Its eternity relies on the stone. In particular, the building is made of tuff, deriving from the eruptions of ancient extinct craters, using simple but particular techniques, that testify formal research and knowledge of main construction solutions. Whole environment parts are man-made considering the tufaceous rock as a block to carve until outlining, in an urban contest, completely or partly hypogeal environments, that represent the residential units of the eternal city. In many archeological contexts, mounds, cube, half-cube or aedicula tombs are residential spaces that interact very strongly with the natural and the man-made landscape, leaving yet a big mark in the history of the way of building.
