The aim of this monograph is to present basic concepts relating to the relational model and to comment on the applicability of the model in survey and statistical research. It is organised as three Chapters. Chapter 1 sets some of the general ideas about databases are reviewed in order to set the context for what follows. The successive chapter presents in turn methods for establishing the logical structure of a database, the essential features of the relational model and the syntax and function of SQL, which is the standard for accessing relational databases.
