Con la rivoluzione industriale la bellezza inizia a porsi non più come una questione personale, legata ad un universo di gusti individuale, ma come uno dei pilastri su cui si fonda la stessa economia capitalista, mediante il sistema dei consumi, del design e della produzione industriale. Attraverso incontri ravvicinati con macchine enormi e complesse, si può comprendere come la bellezza dell’oggetto industriale, pur nella sua imprevedibilità, abbia alcune ragioni che nascono dal confronto con la natura. Essa può ritrovarsi nel particolare di un sistema frenante di un’ auto, come nel profilo alare di un aeroplano, o nello scafo di un sommergibile, oppure ancora ritornando con la memoria alle sagome affilate degli idrovolanti o dei transatlantici degli anni Venti e Trenta, quando, per la prima volta, la forma iniziò a essere generata dal confronto, fondamentale, con la velocità. English Text With the dawn of the industrial revolution, beauty went from being a personal issue that revolved around personal tastes to one of the cornerstones of the capitalist economy, due to the consumption, design and industrial production system that was established. A close look at enormous, complex machines and comparison of them with nature can reveal the unpredictable yet huge potential for beauty in industrial objects. This beauty may be found in the features of a brake unit for a car, the shape of an aeroplane’s wing or the hull of a submarine. Looking back in time, it could also be seen in the streamlined outlines of the seaplanes and transatlantic liners of the 1920s and 1930s, when speed played an essential role in dictating form for the first time.
