This paper reports the preliminary results about the manufacture of artificial aggregates by geopolymerization of carbon fly ashes. Wet fly ashes from Enel power plant in Brindisi were employed. They were taken from the open storage tanks located in the plant, which are periodically wetted to prevent fine powders dispersion. Water in the wet ashes was accounted for in the preparation of activating alkaline solution, which is a procedure definitely cost effective. Monolithic cylindrical samples were prepared by geopolymerization and then characterized by SEM-EDS observations and compressive strength determination. Good results were obtained in terms of compressive strength and compactness of the microstructure.

Abstract
