The consolidation of masonry structures in buildings with low technological quality and very high expressive value, has for some years been the subject of various research activities. Particular attention is paid to rural buildings which, as a result of the different ways of managing agricultural areas or because of the abandonment of cultivated land, remained unused and risk of falling into ruin. Among the various issues involved in the redevelopment of these constructions, the consolidation of the mortar joints of the walls takes a considerable relief. In fact, the mortars of such modest constructions, are often of poor quality due to the use of sand quarry, contaminated by high percentages of clay and the low percentage of binder. This paper intends to provide guidance for the recovery of rural buildings, the recognition of the quality of manufactured goods, the definition of procedures and the choice of materials for the consolidation of mortar joints. We want in this work to avoid the use of the products from organic synthesis (because they have not yet adequately tested and their effects on long term are unknown) and to follow procedures that do not damage the walls. Research is therefore aimed at defining a methodology of intervention on the rural construction and at testing the use of consolidating concrete made of lime and pozzolanic materials.
