The following precursors of fusicoccin (I) were fed to cultures of Fusicoccum amygdali: L-methionine-methyl-14C, DL-mevalonic-2-14C acid, DL-mevalonic-2-3H2-2-14C acid, DL-mevalonic-4(R)-3H-2-14C acid, DL-mevalonic-5-3H2-2-14C acid, and several 3H-labeled minor metabolites of F. amygdali. The labeled I prepns. were subjected to degrdn. and derivatization to det. the positions of the incorporated labels. Based on this, the biosynthetic pathway of I is discussed. I appears to derive from a diterpenoid, which is later prenylated on the glucose moiety, rather than from the rearrangement of a sesterterpenoid.
