Electromagnetic, electric and seismic surveys have been carried out to investigate the landfill site of Modena (Italy), in view of the displacement of 200.000 m3 of deposited waste for the construction of the new high velocity railway line. The aims were to delineate the landfill borders, determine the nature and the physical characteristics of the host materials with emphasis on outlining the distribution of leachate and biogas and to define the pattern of the bedrock. The geophysical survey was coupled with different traditional physical, chemical and biological investigations. For the seismic methods explosive has been used as a new approach in order to provide a suitable energy source. No problem due to the biogas presence has been observed. The adopted geophysical methods provided complementary information, in particular the electromagnetic measurements gave indication on the stratigraphy of the waste mass, while the seismic investigation has well delineated the contact between soil and host materials, outlining the tracks of the progressive waste deposition activity.
