The sensitivity of the surface area of carbons, measured by gas adsorption, to several variables is studied. The influence of the experimental procedure, the test conditions and the method used for analyzing the adsorption isotherms is considered. In this context, experiments have been carried out with five chars from coals ranking from lignite to anthracite and with a metallurgical coke. Results indicate that proper selection of the experimental procedure and the test conditions is crucial to the reliability of the measurements.

Abstract

The sensitivity of the surface area of carbons, measured by gas adsorption, to several variables is studied. The influence of the experimental procedure, the test conditions and the method used for analyzing the adsorption isotherms is considered. In this context, experiments have been carried out with five chars from coals ranking from lignite to anthracite and with a metallurgical coke. Results indicate that proper selection of the experimental procedure and the test conditions is crucial to the reliability of the measurements.
