Wires of 2 high-C steels after H charging by cathodic polarization were tested in a programmable tensile machine at a const. load and various pH. At pH <5 the time-to-failure (tf) is short and relatively unaffected by pH, while at pH ≥5 the scatter of tf is very high. An express lab. method to evaluate the H embrittlement susceptibility of steel wires is recommended.
