A model for the non-ideal behaviour of transient digitizers based on the scan conversion principle has been developed. This model allows digitizer behaviour to be investigated under several operating conditions in order to: (i) verify performance enhancement obtained through new digital signal processing techniques, (ii) develop characterization techniques peculiar to scan converters and (iii) illustrate working mechanisms and error sources with educational aims. In this paper the proposed model is described in detail and its validity and application range are illustrated through several examples. Copyright © 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Abstract
A model for the non-ideal behaviour of transient digitizers based on the scan conversion principle has been developed. This model allows digitizer behaviour to be investigated under several operating conditions in order to: (i) verify performance enhancement obtained through new digital signal processing techniques, (ii) develop characterization techniques peculiar to scan converters and (iii) illustrate working mechanisms and error sources with educational aims. In this paper the proposed model is described in detail and its validity and application range are illustrated through several examples.
