The structure of a new monocyclic diterpenoid, petiodial (4), present in the green seaweed U. petiolata, has been determined on the basis of physico-chemical data. This alga also produces udoteal (3), a feeding deterrent metabolite previously isolated from the taxonomically related species U. flabellum. © 1983 Birkhäuser Verlag.
