Some fundamental definitions are recalled in connection with the limit running characteristics of A. C. machines, fed with variable frequency. On the basis of these definitions, useful relations are obtained to determine the apparent power of the necessary convertor, by which the start-up of a synchronous generator of given characteristics is effected within a fixed time interval. The characteristics of asynchronous and synchronous start-up and of the so-called asynchronous and synchronous hybrid start-up are considered in particular. Finally the three different types of start-up considered are compared
