The volcano of Somma-Vesuvius, located near Naples (southern Italy), buried Pompeii and Herculaneum during the 79 CE eruption. It consists of an old stratovolcano, Monte Somma, collapsed several times because of huge explosive eruptions, and a recent cone, Vesuvius, grown inside the summit depression (caldera) after the 79 CE eruption.
