The historical series of meteorological data recorded at the Meteorological Observatory of the University of Naples Federico II, located in the centre of Naples (southern Italy) was used to detect statistically significant thermopluviometric variations characterised by the disappearance of intermediate seasons, increasing numbers of intense heavy showers, long periods of drought and an increasing number of cloudy days. Analysis of air temperature differences measured in the centre of Naples and at the top of Mt. Vesuvius, 612 m high and 15 km away, allowed the identification of an urban heat island which, during summer afternoons and with clear skies, emits an amount of energy comparable to that induced by the Sun.
