Association between Kaposi's sarcoma and squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx.

The laryngeal location of Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS) is extremely rare. To our knowledge, there are no previous reports on the coexistence of a KS of the larynx and a squamous cell carcinoma at this site. The observation of a clinical case characterized by this association arises some questions about the interference of different pathogenetic mechanisms on the onset and evolution of KS of the larynx. The laryngeal carcinoma might have had a local influence on the aberrant vascular proliferation, typical of Kaposi’s lesion, by releasing specific angiogenesis-promoting cytochines. Vascular endothelial growth factor could represent the chemical mediator of the local interaction between the 2 neoplastic populations, accounting for the close histopathologic correlation at the same site.
