The case of Eluana Englaro in Italy has fueled much debate, the media first, then political institutions, on issues related to end of life issues. A public opinion, mainly Catholic, has expressed opposition to the interruption of artificial nutrition (nasogastric tube), which is considered equivalent to euthanasia. Another part of the public were in favor compared to the direct determination of the reconstructed affected even in the absence of a formal living will. One of the main points of divergence in the discussion has involved the suspension of nutrition and hydration of the woman, when considering them like a sanitary treatment, and then a therapy, or like a life-sustaining base, and if the their possible suspension could be made by third parties in the absence of a direct and explicit will of the patient.
