Aim of the study was the evaluation of dexmedetomidine for chemical restraint of two species of raptor birds. Fourteen raptor birds were injected i.m. with a mixture of atropine and dexmedetomidine. Sedation and chemical restraint were timed and scored. Vital parameters were monitored before and during isoflurane anesthesia and recovery. At the end of the non painful procedure the α2 antagonist atipamezole was given i.m. Dexmedetomidine proved to be an effective and reliable restraint agent for raptors, free from major complications.

Abstract
