This paper reports on the design and analysis of two types of lightweight energy absorber for a rail vehicle driver’s cab. The structural crashworthiness requirements for railway vehicles are briefly reviewed, and the design concepts for the two absorbers are described. LS-DYNA was used to simulate the crush performance of the lightweight energy absorbers. It is demonstrated that the two lightweight designs provide a similar overall collapse response to conventional rail vehicle energy absorbers whilst providing a weight saving of up to half a tonne per cab.

Abstract

This paper reports on the design and analysis of two types of lightweight energy absorber for a rail vehicle driver’s cab. The structural crashworthiness requirements for railway vehicles are briefly reviewed, and the design concepts for the two absorbers are described. LS-DYNA was used to simulate the crush performance of the lightweight energy absorbers. It is demonstrated that the two lightweight designs provide a similar overall collapse response to conventional rail vehicle energy absorbers whilst providing a weight saving of up to half a tonne per cab.
