Nitrate contamination of groundwater is increasing on a worldwide scale, due, principally, to the high use of fertilizers, to the leaking from the sewage network and to the presence of old septic systems. The research reported herein presents a method for groundwater contamination risk assessment based on a previous experience of the author in terms of nitrate risk evaluation (DUCCI et al. 2007). This paper starts from a definition of the GIS layers used for the application of the method based on the geo-indicators. Afterward, the protocol to overlap the layers and the weight of these is explained. The methodology is applied in a large flat area of southern Italy, with, in a wide sector, very high concentrations in NO3.

Abstract
Nitrate contamination of groundwater is increasing on a worldwide scale, due, principally, to the high use of fertilizers, to the leaking from the sewage network and to the presence of old septic systems. The research reported herein presents a method for groundwater contamination risk assessment based on a previous experience of the author in terms of nitrate risk evaluation (DUCCI et al. 2007). This paper starts from a definition of the GIS layers used for the application of the method based on the geo-indicators. Afterward, the protocol to overlap the layers and the weight of these is explained. The methodology is applied in a large flat area of southern Italy, with, in a wide sector, very high concentrations in NO3.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
