With the aim to assess the structural behaviour of the typical buildings located in the Vesuvius volcanic region, a reinforced concrete building, dated in the Seventies, has been selected, as representative of the local constructive techniques. The building was designed to resist gravity loads only, so it is first checked against the combination of vertical actions at the ultimate limit state, in compliance with the new Italian code (MD, 2008). Therefore the structural capabilities against the pyroclastic falls on roof and then the tectonic earthquake of Irpinia on the 23 November 1980 and the volcanic earthquake occurred in October 1999 are evaluated through static and dynamic non linear analysis. The structural weaknesses of the study building are highlighted.
