This brief report discusses a key aspect of seismic risk, i.e., the underestimation of site amplification effects in many Italian urbanized areas that are located in alluvial plains or valleys and the related problem of computing the seismic hazard of a site from an accurate and thorough knowledge of local geologic and geoseismic factors.

Abstract
