Two ancient cultivars of Malus pumila Miller (Rosaceae) from Southern Italy, called “Mela Gelata” and “Mela Limoncella,” have disappeared from markets and are in danger of extinction. An analysis of the genetic variability of the two varieties using nuclear and plastid markers was carried out in order to understand the genetic heritage of the two varieties and to assist with their conservation and commercial use.
