The present report is an attempt to investigate the influence of cadmium exposure on the distribution of cadmium accumulation and S100 protein expression in brain of zebrafish (Danio rerio). Cadmium accumulation in brain was measured by APAT IRSA-CNR metodic, 3000 Section 3010 division. S100 protein expression was determined by ABC technique. 18 adult fishes were exposed to contaminated water -(1mg/L of CdCl2). Groups of 6 fishes were killed after 2, 7 and 16 days. Another 18 fishes were keeped in uncontaminated water and constituted control animals. Cadmium concentration increases in brain just after 2 days and it reaches the maximum value after 16 days. The staining pattern of monoclonal antibody S100 in several regions of adult zebrafish brain was then assessed. After 2 and 7 days we observed a considerable decrement of the S100 immunoreactive structures in the medulla and ventricular zone. After 16 days Cd exposure, the optic tectum showed a reduction of S100 immunorectivity. Following cadmium treatment our data indicate that it exists a correlation between decrement of S100 protein expression and cadmium accumulation found in the brain. Maybe cadmium crosses the blood-brain-barrier and it accumulates in the brain, in particular in glial cells, this causes alteration of cellular functions.
