An experimental study has been carried out to investigate the effects of the mean net stress and suction on the initial shear stiffness of a medium plasticity soil. To this purpose a Resonant Column-Torsional Shear (RCTS-ns) device working in suction controlled conditions available at the University of Naples Federico II has been used. Initial shear modulus has been measured almost continuously during isotropic compression tests at constant suction. High enough net stress has been used to achieve a normally consolidated state of the soil. According to previous literature studies, the effect of suction on the initial shear stiffness of soils seems to be significantly affected by the soil plasticity. A synthesis of the experimental data is attempted in order to quantify the effect of soil plasticity on G0 comparing the data collected during the above mentioned experimental program with other data on soils with different plasticity.

Abstract
