Abstract: Peripheral territory is the main site showing the deterioration of the rapport between city and country. In general it is possible to affirm that the continuity of the built one makes so difficult to mark the confinements of the city from the outskirts and the country. That's why in the contemporary city the residual zones, the interstices, are constituted as the place of the contradiction, of the not resolved conflicts, of the social dissatisfaction, but also of the aspiration to the resumption of abandoned territories. In the perspective of the sustainable intervention on the territory the practice of the social gardens appears among the most correct formalities of intervention, in the contemporary Italian panorama: this practice, operational today in some regions, it allows the attainment of two main objectives. From a side the guardianship from the built assault of that edges of town territory that would be easy prey of the diffused unauthorized motions in the whole country, through the employment of the ground finalized to limited agricultural productions. From the other an effective tool of help to the weak uses, in specific way the elderly ones: a little piece of ground is submitted to them to cultivate and to manage according to some simple rules. This contribution intends to seek the models that have inspired the affirm of the social gardens in Italy (Dutch models, French, German, Switzerland, Finland) and to offer a reading of the trial that subtends to the individualization of the areas to destine to gardens over that to the formality of assignment and management. Moreover it besides the objective to furnish a first critical reading respect to the impact on the peripheral landscape brought from social gardens opportunely fenced and variedly cultivated by the assignees.
