The paper deals with the hydraulic aspects which are cause of instability of the levees. Using numerical models currently available in literature, in the present work the problems of equilibrium limit and the problems of internal erosion (“piping”) that could be promoted by the seepage phenomena are presented and discussed. The work consists of two parts: in the first part a rational approach is described for the study of the levee’s stability in comparison to problems of equilibrium limit, and a number of diagrams that could be used to the preliminary design of levees. In the second part, the problem of piping is coped by considering a modification of the model by Ojha et al. (2003): the proposed modification seems to favourably interpret the experimental results available in literature.
