Design of signalised junctions plays a crucial role within the whole network design problem. Different optimisation methods and models have been proposed in order to design junctions' parameters with respect to different objectives. However the great part of the proposed models are based on the hypothesis that junction flows are known and fixed. Few equilibration models have been proposed; that is models that take into account in a consistent way the effects of the design process on both the network users' behaviours (junctions' flows) and on junction performances<right single quotation mark> optimisation. Moreover, the great part of those models and/or algorithms are only able to deal with few design variables (such as green and cycle lengths), rather than with the whole set of the signal parameters (composition of groups, composition of phases, scheduling of phases length of phases, etc.). In this paper an algorithm able to deal in a consistent way with both flows and a large set of signal variables is presented.

Abstract

Design of signalised junctions plays a crucial role within the whole network design problem. Different optimisation methods and models have been proposed in order to design junctions' parameters with respect to different objectives. However the great part of the proposed models are based on the hypothesis that junction flows are known and fixed. Few equilibration models have been proposed; that is models that take into account in a consistent way the effects of the design process on both the network users' behaviours (junctions' flows) and on junction performances optimisation.
