This study examines and compares trends in the relation between groundwater exploitation, land use and water quality in multiple-use areas adjacent to two cities: one in a developed country (province of Naples - southern Italy), and the other in a developing country (Mar del Plata, Pampean plain – southeast of Buenos Aires province, Argentina). In both cities and in their nearby periurban areas, continuing urbanization causes many social, economic and environmental changes, which have a considerable impact on groundwater resources, and considerable nitrate pollution. Social and natural geoindicators were analysed and compared in both areas to assess the nitrate risk contamination.
