In this work, the selection of the optimum process parameters during cutting operation of a carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) thin sheet (0.5 mm thickness), using a nanosecond Q-switched diode pumped Nd:YAG laser, is investigated. The multi-passes scanning techniques was adopted. The examined parameters were the repetition pulse frequency, the cutting speed, the diode current and the scanning number necessary to cut the sheet. Initially from each cutting condition, engraving test were performed verifying the depth and the width of the grove, in order to obtain the process effectiveness and the better combination of cutting parameters condition. The process parameters optimisation was done with the analysis of variance (ANOVA) that clearly revealed the effect of the single parameters on the grove geometry. At last, with the better selected parameters combinations, cutting test were performed considering the heat-affected zone (HAZ), the taper of the cut surface and cutting speed. It is resulted that an accurate selection of the process parameters allow an increase of the cutting edge quality at the same removal rate and allow to obtain very small complex edge.
