The choice of a useful connection technology is a key aspect in the design of cold-formed structures, owing to the suitability of such systems to be employed in the industrialized construction field. In this paper, the experimental response of four connecting systems having the same geometry but based on different innovative technologies (mono- and bi-component blind rivets, circular press-joints, self-piercing rivets) is shown. In particular, the mechanical behaviour is investigated by means of lap shear tests carried out on specimens composed of both two and three steel sheets. Furthermore, with regard to the selected connecting systems, the reliability of the design rules recently introduced in the draft of the European standard on cold-formed steel structures (prEN 1993-1-3) is evaluated. Finally, with regard to the circular press-joints, an appropriate design formulation is proposed in order to assess their shear strength.

Abstract
Finally, with regard to the circular press-joints, an appropriate design formulation is proposed in order to assess their shear strength.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
