This volume draws together a collection of research studies in modern biomathematics selected from among those presented at the International Workshop on Biomathematics and Related Computational Problems held at Naples and Anacapri in May, 1987. Treatments range from mathematical to experimental topics in the neurosciences, population dynamics, ecology, and pattern formation. Topics include nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations, wave propagation problems, local and global stability of population models, enzyme catalysis, application of white noise analysis to visual systems, analysis of environmental data, mathematical models for muscle contraction, propagation waves in excitable media, and numerical and computational problems in biomathematics. Besides being an up-to-date survey of modern biomathematics, the work also provides a valuable reference to the current status of research into theoretical neurobiology, mathematical ecology, and population dynamics, as well as to other subjects that can be approached by powerful mathematical and computational techniques, thus making it a work of fundamental importance to the research worker, as well as a valuable supplementary teaching tool.
