The systematic position of Cistacythereis and Hiltermannicythere is discussed and their subgeneric rank proposed. Samples collected in Recent sediments of the Mediterranean African coast and on the Tunisian shelf yelded two species of Cistacythereis (Cistacythereis) Uliczny, 1969 considered new for science, that is Cistacythereis (C.) carthaginiensis and Cistacythereis (C.) hannibalis, which are described and illustrated. The ecology of the subgenus is discussed, especially as far as the bathymetrical and climatic significance is concerned as a tool for paleoecological interpretation
