The paper reports on preliminary results of a research program on adhesion and biofilm growth of a selected bacterial strain on solids carriers, with a specific focus on application to three-phase fluidized bed bioreactors. The microorganism investigated was Pseudomonas stutzeri OX1. Immobilization tests were carried out in thermostatted flasks. A few comparative tests were carried out in a bench-scale three-phase (gas-liquid-solids) airlift reactor operated under continuous aerobic conditions. The carbon source was phenol. Solid carriers were silica sand and natural pumice. Characterization of the biofilm was accomplished by elemental analysis and by scanning electron microscope morphological analysis. Results indicated that biofilm is effectively formed with all the tested carriers since the beginning of the cultures. The biofilm loading on the carriers increased with time, approaching a steady state value in the long term that depends on the nature of the solid carrier.
