THE PAPER DESCRIBES THE UTILIZATION OF SODIUM ALUMINATE AS A PROTECTIVE AND/OR AS A CONSOLIDANT OF YELLOW NEAPOLITAN TUFACEOUS STONE, WIDELY USED AS BUILDING MATERIAL IN CAMPANIA REGION (SOUTHERN ITALY). BY COMPARING CHARACTERISTICS OF UNTREATED AND TREATED TUFF SAMPALES AN INCREASE OF APPARENT DENSITY AND A DECREASE OF APPARENT POROSITY, BOTH OF THE ORDER OF 10%, WERE FOUND. ON THE OTHER HAND BENDING TESTS UNDERLINED AN INCREASE IN MECHANICAL STRENGHT OF THE ORDER OF 40% AS A CONSEQUENCE OF THE Na-ALUMINATE TREATMENT.
