Abstract

Historically, contact tanks have been designed by empirical correlation, physical model studies, or tracer studies conducted after the contact tank has been built. Recently, computation fluid dynamics (CFD) models have been applied to investigate flow and solute transport in disinfection tanks. The objective of the paper is to present the results of a numerical study undertaken to investigate the effect of the number of baffles on the efficiency of a contact tank. Several 2-D steady-state and time-variable numerical simulations were performed with Multiphysics 3.3™ in a contact tank geometry where a different number of baffles was considered. Residence time distribution (RTD) curves were derived for any number of baffles in order to evaluate and to compare their performances. Finally, the dispersion coefficients were computed for the any case.
